Ladies Who Lead: Givanni Alexander

For the third consecutive March, Longbridge is honoring National Women’s History Month by highlighting the lives and achievements of our women leaders in our “Ladies Who Lead” blog series. The women’s history theme for 2024 is, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” With this in mind, we’re taking time to celebrate and recognize the stories of some of our own women leaders at Longbridge Financial.

The first segment in this year’s “Ladies Who Lead” series features Givanni Alexander, Longbridge Closing Manager. We met with Givanni to discuss the culture at Longbridge, her female role models, and her advice to women seeking work-life balance.

Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

A: Women’s History Month provides a space and time to shine a light on the contributions of so many remarkable women throughout our history. No one woman is the same and although each of their contributions may have differed, they were all essential in helping pave the way for equality, growth, and more opportunities for all women.

Q: How could you contribute your wisdom, expertise, or ideas to empower other women?

A: My personal commitment is to never forget my “when”, “why”, and “how” in life. I try my best to be intentional and cognizant of the areas where I can share, teach, and be a mentor to other women. By taking the time to encourage and empower other women to be the best versions of themselves in their careers and/or personal lives, I know I am investing in the future, which in turn opens more doors and opportunities.

Q: How does Longbridge set a culture of equality and inclusivity?

A: Equity, diversity, and inclusion have a powerful driving force and impact especially in the workplace. In my experience, I’ve found Longbridge to be understanding and welcoming, as they truly value hearing from different voices with a wide variety of viewpoints and backgrounds.

Q: Who is your female role model?

A: I have so many! There is a plethora of women who I admire. I am consistently in the company of so many amazing women with intelligent minds, both here at Longbridge and in my personal life. Although they may not be classified as a “role model” per se, they exemplify awesome qualities that have allowed them to persevere and overcome adversity, while remaining committed to achieving their goals. I am so fortunate to be inspired daily by the women in my life.

Q: What is one piece of advice to all women who are juggling between home and work?

A: The concept of work-life balance is something that takes continuous, conscious effort. Finding the sweet spot where everything aligns into its designated place takes time. But managing both aspects well enough to realize the benefits and reap the rewards is essential. At the same time, giving yourself grace and mercy is key! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Set boundaries between work and home. Make time for yourself, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day. At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to be able to focus on work wholeheartedly, yet not feel guilty when you are away from work. Being completely present in both spaces accordingly takes work, but it’s certainly possible.

Q: How can women find mentors?

A: My advice is to look for individuals who embody the qualities you aspire to have. In addition, I think people who have already achieved what you desire to achieve make the best mentors. Ultimately, spending time in the company of those who have more knowledge and wisdom than you can help you make connections that lead to one-on-one mentoring opportunities.

Q: What do you think helped you get so far in your career?

A: I stand on the shoulders of so many people who invested their time, knowledge, and wisdom with me. I think it’s important that I always realize my strengths and recognize my weaknesses and limitations – we all have them. In my opinion, the key is deciding what you want to do about it. Having the desire to level up and the willingness to ask questions and gain new information helps you grow, dream, and achieve your goals.

Q: Do you believe you have achieved everything you wanted to?

A: Not by a long shot! I never stop dreaming. I’m so grateful for my journey and where I’ve made it thus far. I could not have imagined that this would have been the route to bring me to where I am today. However, I still have aspirations and goals that I am working towards every day.

Q: What would you say to your 20-year-old self?

A: Don’t be afraid to take risks! If you don’t jump, the parachute won’t open. Even if you get it wrong, you’ve learned something in the process.

Givanni, thank you for sharing your wise words with us and for being a great role model for women in or working toward leadership!

About Women’s History Month

Celebrated annually throughout the month of March, Women’s History Month dates back to 1981 when Congress authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” It wasn’t until 1987 that, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA), Congress and the President proclaimed March as Women’s History Month.

Since then, presidents have annually proclaimed the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” This recognition honors the contributions and achievements women have made throughout American history.

The women’s history theme for 2024 declared by NWHA is, “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” To learn more about Women’s History Month and this year’s theme, visit https://nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org
